Condensation and heat recovery

PROFITABLE USE OF RECOVERED ENERGY

To allow heat to be used flexibly, it is often necessary to extract the thermal energy at various temperature levels. Heat recovery systems used with local heat and district heat allow the energy that is recovered to be put to the best possible use in a profitable way. For example: Return-flow bypass for district heat network Heating rooms Heating water

MAXIMUM HEAT EXTRACTION USING ERCS
As early as 1996, the first Scheuch flue gas condenser plant for heat recovery was commissioned. Over the years, we have continually developed our processes based on our experience gained through practice and intensive research, which has led us to develop the ercs process (Energy Recovery & Cleaning System). This system ensures maximum heat recovery for boiler outputs of up to 200 MW.

APPLICATION AREAS FOR RECOVERED HEAT
The heat recovered from flue gas can be put to good use for the following applications, for instance:

  • Boosting efficiency in district and local heating networks
  • Process heat (e.g. for steam or ORC processes)
  • Drying shavings, fuel or sawn timber
  • Depluming of the steam plume at the chimney outlet
  • Useful heat for industrial processes

SHORT AMORTIZATION TIMES – CAN BE RETROFITTED
The cost of incorporating a new ercs or retrofitting ercs in existing plants is offset with a ROI within approximately two years.

FURTHER DEDUSTING EFFECTS
Depending on the plant combination, ercs plants reduce fine dust by 30–60 %. In new plants, the investment costs of dedusting components are reduced because they can be designed in a more compact and cost-effective manner. If output increases, the existing limit values will be upheld again thanks to the dedusting effect of a retrofitted ercs plant.

RECOVER 50 % OF THE BOILER OUTPUT FROM HEAT
In winter, when using fuels with up to w65 water basis, up to 50 % of the boiler output can be recovered from the exhaust gas. Experience has shown that you can realistically expect to recover 10–25 % of the boiler output annually on average, depending on the plant configuration and return temperatures.

ERCS INCREASES EFFICIENCY
As fuel water content increases, its energy content decreases while the proportion of latent heat rises. As a result, the heating value of wet fuels is significantly lower than the fuel value. Our ercs (Energy Recovery & Cleaning System) for flue gas condensation recovers up to 50 % of the boiler output from the latent heat energy of flue gas that would otherwise go unused. The latent heat of the evaporation and condensation heat is recovered from flue gas condensation. In addition, some of the sensible heat can be recovered during the temperature decrease in the condensation
plant.

This means that the efficiency of the overall plant can reach well over 100 %. This considerably increases the profitability of the heating or biomass heating power station.

  • Recover 50 % of the boiler output from heat
  • Fuel savings of 30 %
  • Achieve a 20 % reduction in investment costs for the heating plant
  • Reduce dust content

Economizer Condensers
Economizer

Recovery of sensible heat up to approx. 100 °C

Economizers and condensers enable heat to be used in two stages; in the first stage, the ECO (economizer) recovers sensible heat on the water side at a temperature of around 100 °C. This energy can be reused between 90 and 100 °C in applications such as district heat, process heat or standard drying plants.

Condensers

Recovery of latent heat up to approx. 60 °C

Economizers and condensers enable heat to be used in two stages; in the second stage, the flue gas condenser decouples latent heat on the water side at a temperature of around 60 °C. This energy is used for local or district heating networks or for drying shavings, fuel or sawn timber (e.g. in low-temperature drying chambers).
